Creative Rut

I am in a creative rut.

I can sit at the desk in my crafting room for an hour with the only sad result being that all my ink pads are now in alphabetic

On one hand, I have been extremely busy with my day job and I love it.  I feel like I am growing in my career and preparing myself for great things.  My boss is empowering me to develop a career plan and I am empowered to do what I need to grow.

On the other hand, my creative side is drained.  I don’t think I have created anything new in the last few weeks.  This makes me terribly sad, but I can sit at my workspace for hours and nothing with come out.

Has my dual brain caused me to be doomed?!?!?!?!

As I pondered my dilemma, I’ve tried to think of some ways I could get out of this and return to my crazy crafty self.

1. Just admit that you don’t feel creative.  I’m sure everyone goes through this, but I may feel all alone while I’m in the moment.  As my pop would say…”You gotta man up Davis!”

2. Craft Class:  At the end of May, I took a two day art journaling class with Wendy Vecchi.  It was intense; sitting and crafting for eight hours a day could drain anyone.  However, it really pushed me out of my comfort zone and I learned a lot of great techniques with some great products that I may have otherwise passed in the craft aisles.

3. Just Play: As silly as it may seem, sometimes I will close my eyes, pick some random supplies, and just start going to town on a piece of paper.  I’ll have no plan and will hope for the best.  Sometimes it’s a pure disaster, but most of the time it allows to look at things in a different way and will spark plenty of ideas for future projects.

4. Take a break: At some point, you just have to sit a way from a bit.  Might be an hour…might be a week, but there is no point of pushing things if it isn’t going to get you anywhere.

5. You Tube:  There are plenty of crafty people in the world that want to share their passion as much as I do.  I have found YouTube to be a great resource for a few reasons.  First, many of the companies I use for supplies have videos on the latest products and ideas for new cards.  Second, I can get some real perspectives from other consumers on products before I ever buy them.

These just happen to be the things that I do when I’m feeling as crafty as I want to be.  What do you do to get out of your creative rut?
